Game of Thrones Will Be at Least Eight Seasons

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Michael Lombardo, HBO's programming president, announced that Game of Thrones would run to at least season eight.  Originally David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the showrunners, had declared that season seven would be the end.  However now it looks like that isn't the case at all.  Lombardo said this:

Seven-seasons-and-out has never been the [internal] conversation.  The question is: How much beyond seven are we going to do? Obviously we're shooting six now, hopefully discussing seven.  [Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are] feel like there's two more years after six.  I would always love from them to change their minds, but that's what we're looking at right now.

Of course this doesn't mean the show has been green lit for the eight seasons.  But it is reassuring to hear that the option is now being talked about.

In the interview with Lombardo, he was also asked about the possibility of doing a prequel series.  This is what he said to that:

I would be open to anything that Dan and David wanted to do - about Game of Thrones, or any subject matter.  It really would depend fully on what they wanted to do.  I think you're right, there's enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel, if George and Dan and David decide they want to tackle that.  At this point, all the focus is on the next few years of the show.  We haven't had any conversations about that at this point.

"The Dance of Dragons" Viewership Breakdown

The numbers are in for the latest episode of Game of Thrones, "The Dance of Dragons".  And although they saw an increase, from the previous weeks episode, it was just by a hair.  "The Dance of Dragons" was viewed by 7.14 million people during its initial airing, an increase of 140,000 people, or just 2%.

I had expected to see "The Dance of Dragons" bring in closer to 8 million viewers.  But still its nice to see an increase in the viewership.  The only question this raises is whether or not the finale will bring in a higher number than the, record breaking, premiere for this season.  Looking at previous seasons, the season finale episodes have always preformed the best.

What do you think though?  Are you surprised with the viewership for "The Dance of Dragons"?  And do you think the final episode will break the record as the most viewed episode of the season?

Game of Thrones Nominated for 2 TCA Awards

The Television Critics Association (TCA) has just announced the nominations this week, for their annual awards.  The TCA recognizes outstanding achievements in television.  This year Game of Thrones has nabbed two nominations.

Outstanding Achievement in Drama

  • The Americans - FX
  • Empire - Fox
  • Game of Thrones - HBO
  • Justified - FX
  • Mad Men - AMC

Program of the Year

  • The Americans - FX
  • Empire - FOX
  • Game of Thrones - HBO
  • Man Men - AMC
  • Transparent  - Amazon

It should be interesting to see how Mad Men preforms, since it was the series final season this year.  And it's also pretty interesting to see Transparent nominated for Program of the Year, I believe this is Amazon's first ever TCA nomination.

So who do you think will win these two awards? Will the final season of Mad Men sweep the brackets, or do you think Game of Thrones, or any other show, has a chance of winning the awards?
