Yesterday during Game of Thrones panel at the San Diego Comic Con we got a video showing us some of the new characters that'll be joining the ranks in season 5. The first few characters we'll be looking at Nymeria "Nym" Sand, Tyene Sand, and Obara Sand. These are the main three Sand Snakes. Now if you haven't read the books you might be asking yourself "who are the Sand Snakes?" Simply enough the Sand Snakes are the bastard daughters of Oberyn Martell. Nym, Tyene, and Obara, just happen to be the three oldest daughters.
The first of the three is Nymeria Sand, Nym for short. who will be played by Jessica Henwick. Nymeria is described in HBO's press release:
Nym Sand is the second eldest of the late Prince Oberyn’s bastard daughters. Her mother was an Eastern noblewoman who brought Nym up to be cultured, graceful and deadly with a whip.
All of this sounds great and is very true to the books, except for the part about a whip. Nymeria is known to be very skilled with blades, not whips. But what gives me reassurance that Nymeria will also be armed with daggers, is when Jessica Henwick was asked what she liked most about her character and responded with:
Hopefully this means that Jessica will be using more than just a whip.
Our second Sand Sank is Tyene Sand, who will be played by Rosabell Laurenti Sellers.
Tyene Sand is the daughter of the late Prince Oberyn Martell by Ellaria Sand, his final paramour. Tyene is fiercer than she looks, especially with her twin daggers.
Tyene is known for being the sweet and innocent girl - at least by her looks, her actions speak a different tale - I'm hoping they'll be able to capture this essence about her. Again similar to Nymeria, my only problem is the mention of the twin daggers. This is something that would have made more sense with Nymeria. But with Tyene it should have mentioned her exceptional knowledge of poisons. Hopefully that little part wont be thrown out of the show.
And for our last Sand Snake, Obara Sand. Obara Sand will be played by Keisha Castle-Hughes. Obara is described in HBO's press release as:
A fearsome warrior, Obara Sand is the eldest bastard daughter of the late Prince Oberyn Martell. Her mother was a Dornish peasant girl who caught the eye of the late Prince.
Obara is exactly that, a warrior. She is hot tempered, and armed to teeth with a spear, whip, and a shield. These are the hands that should be holding onto the whip talked about with Nym. I also hope they include Obara's childhood story with her mom. I know the show doesn't do flashbacks, but this is something that could simply be told through dialogue.
Overall I really like the casting of these three characters. In the end it comes down to how their written in the show. So far their descriptions all sound great, with the exception of Nym's and Tyene's 'weapon of choice' but if that's my biggest complaint, that's probably a good thing.
So what do you think of the casting?
